NO NOT THOSE PENGUINS!

 Those Penguins….

Every time the conversation turns to attire for the guys at a wedding I get the same questions…

Does my dad need to match the groom’s dad?

Do they need to match the guys?

Should they match the groom?

Should they really wear tuxedos- it’s not black tie?

*If you are client and have had this discussion with me recently… this is NOT about you (honest) … it really comes up all the time…

The answer is simple –

Should they really wear a tuxedo? Unless you’re on the beach, or a park and REALLY informal – a tuxedo for the groom, groomsmen and dads is generally appropriate…

I generally ask the following questions which guide not only whether you should wear one but also how to style them…

Is the bride wearing a fairly formal traditional gown? OK, then the groom should dress in similar formality

Do the bridesmaid’s gowns match the bride? NO, then the guys similarly don’t need to match the groom – adding a splash of color to the tie, vest or cummerbund which matches the bridesmaids is nice…

Do the mothers of the bride/groom’s gown match the bridesmaids? NO – so the dads don’t necessarily match the groomsmen…

However… I also feel that if mom is wearing a tea length dress or pant suit then dad is probably OK in a dark suit…

In general for the bridal party IT IS A FORMAL OCCASION – bride, groom, parents and bridal party are all in formal photos and take an active role in the weddings…so, even if the guests are not requested in “black tie”- a tuxedo is usually appropriate.

For me as a wedding planner… the time of day, and location dictate the formality…

You’ll find tuxedos in a much wider variety of styles, jacket cuts and lengths as well as colors….it’s not all black and formal…
