OK, ok ….I typically don’t get political on here, and this may get closer to the edge than normal….

But it is wedding related and does directly relate to a recent speaking engagement…

This past week I was invited to speak to the South Jersey Networking Group for the Association of Bridal Consultants on the topic of Civil Unions and Commitment Ceremonies…

We were hosted by Karen Grace of Braddock’s Tavern in Medford who does a great job already of making same sex couples feel welcome. (They’re hosting “C’s” gay and lesbian bowling league banquet too).

As the local consultants will probably we working with some same sex couples on planning ceremonies and receptions…

The truth is numbers of Civil Unions in New Jersey thus far are much lower than projected…not totally a surprise… Civil Union vs. Marriage is sort of like telling folks it’s ok to ride the bus, just sit in the back…

And because of this many couples I know are not rushing to tie the knot….

One of the key pieces in speaking to consultants is teaching them that ….our gay and lesbian couples will be no different than any of the straight couple we’ve worked with in the past…

We need to listen to them about their relationship, families, religious preferences, style and personalities….

Just the same as working with straight couples… I need to know the right wedding professionals to refer clients to… not every couple is the right match for every professionals regardless of if the couple is gay or straight…

That is why I thoroughly research all the wedding professionals I choose to work with, all of my couples trust that I am not only referring them to someone whose work I trust, who fits their budget and style…but also someone with whom they will click…

Working with same sex couples will have the same challenges as any other couple…family issues, budget constraints, time crunches, guest list drama…all the same…

And it will also have the same benefits…getting to be part of the biggest day in the life of two people who love each other, as they are surrounded by family and friends to celebrate hearts, health and happiness.

I urge all wedding professionals to be open to the amazing things all of our clients have to share with us….
